Checklist: Your Taxes / Things to do this weekend with your money

August 04, 2000|LIZ PULLIAM WESTON

Three tax deadlines are coming up. Aug. 10 is the deadline for workers who received $20 or more in tips in July to report those earnings to their employers. Aug. 15 is the tax return deadline for those who applied for an automatic extension in April. Sept. 15 is the day third-quarter estimated tax vouchers are due.

4 Today: If you got a tax-filing extension in April, but you still can't file your federal taxes by Aug. 15, you can use Form 2688 to apply for a two-month extension. Unlike your first extension, however, this one is not automatic; the IRS generally requires that the problem be beyond your control.

4 Saturday: If you constantly file taxes late because you're disorganized, consider investing in financial software such as Intuit's Quicken or Microsoft's Money to help you better track your tax situation. These programs also can help keep better track of any tips and figure estimated quarterly tax payments.

4 Sunday: To make sure you're on track with this year's taxes, use the tax estimators in Quicken or Money or on Web sites such as http://www .turbotax.com to see whether your federal withholding and other tax payments are likely to match your 2000 tax bill. The penalty can be harsh if you under-withhold.
