Borchard Road Extension to Open

August 11, 2000|MAIJA-LIISA NAGARAJAN

The most controversial road extension in Thousand Oaks could open to the public Tuesday.

Borchard Road, the subject of heated debate and numerous lawsuits over the past couple of years, will open as early as Tuesday and as late as Aug. 25, said Don Nelson, the city's public works director.

Although its opening is not a surprise, it remains a disappointment to many Casas de la Senda residents who live at the bottom of the road near Los Vientos Drive. A number of them say the extension--which has a small portion graded at 12%--is too steep and unsafe.

In the next week, city traffic engineer John Helliwell will conduct the final inspection. If it meets city codes and safety standards, the city will approve and own the road. In September, the City Council is expected to approve the road as a formality, said Tim Giles, an assistant city attorney.
