Fire Marshals Halt Magazine Party Because of Crowding

August 12, 2000

LOS ANGELES — Police shut down a Maxim magazine party Thursday night at a motel next to Farmer's Market because fire marshals were concerned about an overflow crowd, authorities said.

Police in riot gear responded to the party about 10:30 p.m. at 115 S. Fairfax Ave. next to Farmer's Market, police said. Maxim magazine had rented the entire 65-room Farmer's Daughter motel for the event, a motel employee said.

Maxim had a guest list of 700 people, but because of a radio promotion advertising a Web-cast of the party, more people than could be accommodated showed up, said Maxim spokeswoman Kim Willis. The motel could safely accommodate 950 people, Willis said organizers were told by the Fire Department.

Event organizers had city permits to close parts of Fairfax for the party, Kelly said.
