Building Burns at Chevy Chase Club

August 18, 2000|GREG RISLING

A fire caused $500,000 in damage early Thursday to a two-story building on the grounds of the Chevy Chase Country Club in Glendale, but no one was hurt, authorities said.

Flames and smoke were seen at the rear of the clubhouse on the 3000 block of East Chevy Chase Drive about 4:20 a.m. An off-duty Glendale police officer saw the blaze and notified the Glendale Fire Department, authorities said.

The structure was well-involved when firefighters arrived, a Glendale dispatcher said. It took about 30 minutes before firefighters knocked down the flames.

Firefighters estimate the blaze caused about $300,000 in structural damage and another $200,000 in content loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A club employee who declined to give his name said it is unknown when the private golf course would reopen.
