Caring for Victim of Alzheimer's Isn't Easy

August 21, 2000

Re "Caring for Her Father on His Terms" (Aug. 7), I applaud Maureen Reagan's efforts on behalf of Alzheimer's victims and caregivers. I lost my stepmother to the disease 10 years ago. My aunt has had it for nine years.

I'm writing to empathize with Maureen Reagan's anger that the battle for her and others will be lost before research money provides a cure or at least early intervention. I know just how she feels.

In the early '80s when AIDS was identified as a fast-growing crisis, we had a president who dared not speak its name, let alone request support to fight it with education and research money. My son tested positive in '89 and died in '94.
