VENTURA COUNTY ROUNDUP | Conejo Valley

School-to-Career Plan OK Expected

August 22, 2000|GRACE E. JANG

Young medical school hopefuls in eastern Ventura County could soon get an earlier start in the increasingly competitive admissions process.

After years of discussion, the Conejo Valley Unified School District is set to begin a school-to-career program in the upcoming school year.

The school board is expected tonight to approve a 10-week course to introduce high school freshmen to the program. The meeting will begin at 7 at 1400 E. Janss Road, Thousand Oaks.

"Career Choices" is supposed to help freshmen determine a career path--such as health care, technology or business--after assessing their respective strengths and weaknesses. Instructors would then help the students design high school curricula along the chosen path.

Students are not obligated to stick with one path, nor would the course be a graduation requirement, said Martha Mutz, the district's curriculum director.
