Chocolate Bar Will Unrap Its Third-Anniversary Gifts on Friday

August 24, 2000|HEIDI SIEGMUND CUDA

Clubland hits another milestone Friday, when the pivotal hip-hop joint Chocolate Bar celebrates its third anniversary at L.A.'s Club Voodoo. . . . The Sunset Room's finally beginning to hit its entertainment stride by booking some fine singer-songwriters. Took me a few weeks to recover from the pimpin' showcase Elektra Records threw at the Hollywood nightclub for its latest ingenue, Tamia--a singer who may have what it takes to hit the big leagues. And not because her husband is b-ball star Grant Hill, but because she's got skills of her own, not to mention an excellent fashion sense.

At her big shindig (which musta cost Elektra a million dollars because folks ate, drank and were merry, gratis) she wore old-school lace-up jeans and an off-the-shoulder sequined top a la "Flashdance" and smoldered with understated class. Songwriter-producer Leon Ware has taken up a Tuesday night residency at the Sunset Room. Ware wrote so many R&B hits over the last three decades that his walls must be awash in platinum and gold. I dunno know about you, but Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" album--which Ware wrote--took up residency on my lousy Decca turntable for a full decade. I'm expecting beaucoup roses at his feet on Tuesday.

One of my favorite Clubland whirlybirds, Culver Saloon promoter Ed Boswell, tells me that singer Eddie Reed tells him the new name of the Foothill Club in Signal Hill's gonna be Monte Carlo's, and plans are in the works to install a hydraulically hopping Chevy Monte Carlo on its roof.

Those who want to do a little rooftop hell-raising while it's still the Foothill can do so at Friday night's Triple X Records bash, featuring the Dickies, Adz and Streetwalkin' Cheetahs.

Now 'scuse me 'cuz I'm off to the florist.
