Man Killed on Freeway When Driver Rams Disabled Car

August 24, 2000

LOS ANGELES — A man was run over and killed by his own car on the Glendale Freeway Wednesday morning after another motorist hit his disabled vehicle in the fast lane, police said.

The man, whose identity was withheld until relatives could be notified, had hit the center divider in the northbound lanes of the Glendale Freeway at Colorado Street, said California Highway Patrol Officer Shirley Gaines. He got out of his car to investigate when the second accident happened, Gaines said.

A Mustang traveling at a high rate of speed hit the man's Toyota in the fast lane and the Toyota was pushed on top of him, Gaines said. The man died at the scene.

"This happens just ever so frequently," Gaines said. "You're supposed to stay in your car with your seat belt fastened" and wait for help.
