Andy Rees has drawn raves from Canyon coaches since moving from linebacker to defensive line.

"Since we moved him, we stand around at practice watching him and we just say, 'Wow,' " Coach Jack Bowman said. "He's going to be something to watch this year."

Tony Ortiz of Lancaster, Golden League back of the year last season after rushing for 1,191 yards and intercepting five passes, was a no-show for the Eagles' first practice Monday.

"I think he's holding out," Coach Troy Jackson said. "Maybe he thinks this is pro camp and he wants a bigger contract."

Ortiz reported for practice Tuesday, without an agent.

Jackson, in his first season, played at Canyon under Harry Welch.

When Jackson was hired last spring, he called Welch, offensive coordinator last season at Valencia, and asked if he would be interested in coaching at Lancaster.

Welch had his own question: "Do you have a pot of gold?"
