Funds Shifted From Theater to Depot

August 29, 2000|NANCY FORREST

The city's railroad depot rehabilitation has received more than $19,000 in community development block grants from the Santa Paula Theater Center Project.

With the addition of needed electrical improvements, the depot project's costs have risen, said Stephen Stuart, the city's building and safety director.

The project is part of the second phase of the Railroad Plaza project, which includes construction of public restrooms, a rail platform, landscaping, lighting, drainage and a gazebo, City Manager Peter Cosentini said.

The $824,000 plaza project, which is being funded with state and federal grants, is one of 55 capital improvement projects for this year approved by the City Council.

The council has approved construction of a fence along a storm drain next to the railroad right of way between Peck Road and Cameron Street as part of its 2000-01 capital improvement program. The fence will cost $30,000, which will come from the city's general fund.

Cosentini said the existing drain is unfenced and a potential public hazard.
