December 06, 2000

Joyce "Rocky" Flint, 64, the mother of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer who worked in the field of HIV and AIDS treatment in the Fresno area. A Wisconsin native with a master's degree in counseling, Flint moved to Fresno in the late 1980s, managing a retirement residence before becoming a case manager for the Central Valley AIDS Team in 1991. The same year, her son Jeffrey was arrested and admitted killing 17 young men and boys in Milwaukee, mutilating the victims and cannibalizing some of them. He was serving 16 life terms when he was bludgeoned to death in 1994 by another inmate. "She was enthusiastic, and she was compassionate, and she turned her own tragedy into being able to have a great deal of empathy for people with HIV," Julio Mastro, executive director of the Living Room, an HIV community center in Fresno, told a reporter for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. One of Dahmer's lawyers, Gerald Boyle, said his client told him repeatedly that Flint was a great mother. "It was clear she bore no responsibility. . . . She had to live with the idea that she was the mother of a monster, and it drove her crazy," Boyle said. On Nov. 27 in Fresno of breast cancer.
