President Purges 13 Military Officers

December 31, 2000|From Times Wire Reports

Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica retired 13 top military officers, including indicted war criminal Gen. Dragoljub Ojdanic, a former army chief, the state-run Tanjug news agency said. But Gen. Nebojsa Pavkovic, the current army chief and longtime ally of former President Slobodan Milosevic, was not on the list. The decision to leave him as army chief could deepen a rift between Kostunica and Serbian Prime Minister-designate Zoran Djindjic, who advocates the prompt dismissal of Milosevic loyalists. Djindjic particularly insisted that Pavkovic should go, but Kostunica has resisted so far, citing legality.
