Bill to Cut Pollutant Runoff Introduced

February 14, 2000|GINA PICCALO

Assemblywoman Hannah-Beth Jackson has introduced legislation that would employ new devices to clean storm drains and reduce the flow of pollutants to the sea.

On Friday, Jackson (D-Santa Barbara) introduced the Street Runoff Reduction Pilot Program, which would use devices designed by civil engineers at UCLA to trap pollution seeping from debris and trash.

The program would clear debris from storm drains without increasing the risk of street flooding, she said.

Jackson, who represents Ventura, Ojai, Santa Paula and most of Santa Barbara County, said the bill is designed to reduce runoff that pollutes beaches in coastal communities.
