The City Council will review on Wednesday the possibility of creating an animal shelter that would euthanize only animals that are terminally ill or dangerous.
The city currently contracts with the county for animal control services, which cost about $150,000, and euthanized 108 of 429 animals impounded in 1998, according to a city staff report.
The proposed shelter would cost $490,000 the first year and $454,350 each additional year, according to the report.
City staff is recommending that the City Council, instead of creating a shelter, work with Orange County Animal Control and shelter supporters to develop a program in which the county would relinquish animals that have not been adopted to the supporters.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 32400 Paseo Adelanto.
