* I was not surprised by the letter written to the Valley Edition by Bonny Herman, president, Valley Industry and Commerce Assn., about Ahmanson Ranch. Her view is consistent with that of developers: build, build, build, and run with the money.
For Ahmanson Ranch to be paved over. . . is to totally disregard the future generations of Californians who would never be able to enjoy the beauty of undisturbed land in a nature setting. Another downside will be the extinction of native plants and wildlife.
Herman's statement that Ahmanson will provide more than 3,000 homes within 20 minutes of the San Fernando and Conejo valleys is ludicrous. It will take 20 minutes to get from Ahmanson to the 101 Freeway because of the disastrous effects of 43,000 additional car trips a day. The freeways have reached saturation, water supplies are diminishing, wildlife is becoming extinct, trees are being chopped down, air quality is suffering and pristine land is being bulldozed. We have reached the point where development has to be approached sensibly before it is too late.
Call and write Washington Mutual and inform them of your concern about this oversized development that will affect the quality of life in the Conejo and San Fernando valleys in a most negative way. Contact your local, state and federal politicians and voice your displeasure over the rape of this land.
