WEST HOLLYWOOD — A man lost his balance and fell to his death from an eighth-floor balcony at a Sunset Strip hotel early Wednesday, authorities said.

Witnesses and friends told sheriff's deputies that the man, identified by authorities as Banning Capps, 25, of Carlsbad, had been drinking, said Lt. Ken Leffler of the Sheriff's Department's West Hollywood station. The accident happened about 1:30 a.m. at the Hyatt Hotel, Leffler said.

Deputies found Capps dead on the pavement. Guests in a room on one of the lower floors said they had seen the man put his leg over the balcony, Leffler said. Witnesses said it appeared the man lost his balance, Leffler said.

The man and several friends had just returned from a concert at the House of Blues, Leffler said.
