Regarding "Expanding Horizons With a Summer Job" (May 21): Last October we spent a week at Maine's Acadia National Park. A week was not enough time to hike the glorious trails of this magnificent park. I agree with author Ellen Melinkoff's assessment of the Burning Tree restaurant in Otter Creek; it was one of the highlights of our trip.
However, Bar Harbor was way, way too touristy, crowded and commercial for us. After three days, we dashed off to the other side of Mount Desert Island and stayed at the lovely Kingsleigh Inn 1904 bed-and-breakfast in Southwest Harbor. This charming town manages to cross the sleepy ambience of a Maine village with good restaurants, a gourmet bakery and thriving yacht-building businesses. We loved our stay there and would recommend it to anyone visiting Acadia National Park.
