Authorities Thursday charged a 58-year-old Los Angeles man and two others with insurance fraud for allegedly faking his death and trying to claim about $2 million in life insurance.
Raul Eduardo Pero was charged with 14 counts of insurance fraud, said Sandi Gibbons, a spokeswoman for the district attorney.
Pero's daughter, Monique Liza Pero, 24, of Tarzana, was charged with 10 counts of insurance fraud and his roommate, Emma Gloria Alcaraz, 65, faces eight charges, Gibbons said.
Authorities say Pero bought about $1.95 million worth of life insurance and then gave the insurance companies a fake death certificate.
He then allegedly adopted a fake identity to try to claim the money. Pero's roommate and daughter are accused of helping him deal with claims.
Investigators became suspicious when Alcaraz allegedly gave insurance companies conflicting information on the circumstances of Pero's death.
All three are scheduled to be arraigned June 28 in Los Angeles Superior Court.
