LOS ANGELES — The county's welfare office is expanding its effort to boost Medi-Cal enrollment by trying to register people in the federal food stamp program.
The Department of Public Social Services wants to increase by 35% this year the number of people who are not on welfare but use food stamps. Currently, fewer than 40% of those eligible for food stamps apply.
Social workers are fanning out across the county to boost the number of people enrolled in Medi-Cal, setting up stations in health clinics and schools. They will add food stamp papers to their battery of forms, said spokesman Brian Lew.
"The people who are eligible for Medi-Cal are usually eligible for food stamps," he said. "This is the easiest and quickest way to get to them."
