Supervisors Appoint Interim County Assessor

March 02, 2000

LOS ANGELES — The county Board of Supervisors has appointed a 30-year veteran of the assessor's office as the new interim county assessor, who will serve until a permanent assessor is chosen in the November elections.

Rick Auerbach, who has served as assistant assessor, was retiring assessor Kenneth P. Hahn's choice for a successor. But more than 40 others applied for the nine-month stint, and a county panel winnowed down that list to four finalists.

Auerbach, the only county employee on that list, was chosen by a 4-1 vote Tuesday by county supervisors during executive session, with Supervisor Gloria Molina dissenting. "You need the continuity," Supervisor Don Knabe said. "He's well qualified to do the job."

As the interim assessor, Auerbach is expected to get a boost in his race to become permanent in November. Other potential candidates include former county Assessor John Lynch and former assistant to the assessor John Carl Brogdon.
