Scholarship to Aid Geography Students

March 03, 2000|STEPHANIE STASSEL

A scholarship fund of about $135,000 has been established at Cal State Northridge for community college transfer students majoring in geography.

The Michael E. Tamburro Geography Scholarship Fund, in memory of the 1981 CSUN grad who died four years ago in a helicopter crash, was started last year with a $25,000 gift from his widow, Tamara Tamburro. The fund later received a $100,000 donation from his business partner, Alan Purwin, in addition to about $10,000 in contributions from friends.

The first scholarship will probably be awarded in May, followed by a second scholarship in either December or January, said Mishka Michon, director of development for CSUN's College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The amount awarded has not yet been determined.

"[Scholarship funds] of this size at a public university are so much bigger in their impact than at a school like UCLA," Michon said. "A student at CSUN can have their life change with $500."

Application guidelines will be announced by late March.
