* Darren FitzGerald was appointed coach at Verdugo Hills High this week, replacing Don Scott Jr., who resigned after five seasons to take a job as an assistant coach at Glendale College.

FitzGerald, 29, was Verdugo Hills' offensive coordinator the last three seasons.

Scott, who posted a 21-33 record with the Dons, will remain a teacher at Verdugo Hills. He becomes the linebackers coach at Glendale College.

FitzGerald also has taken over as softball coach at Verdugo Hills, replacing Andrea Standley.

* Coach Bill Redell has hired three more assistants at Oaks Christian.

Joining the new program are Dave McLaughlin, a former Agoura assistant who will coach the quarterbacks; Paul Giberson, a former Crespi assistant who will coach the offensive line, and Kyle Cummings, a former lineman at Crespi who will coach the defensive line.


* Gregg Guenther of Taft and Grant Pledger of Cleveland have been selected co-players of the year in the West Valley League.

Selected to the all-league team were Justin Saad-Anthony of El Camino Real, Ronald Gray and Steve Smith of Taft, Anthony Davis and Quenton Harvey of Cleveland and Midwin Francis of Granada Hills.


* Pete Sampras plays an exhibition at 12:30 p.m. today in the Balance Bar Music and Tennis Festival at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks.

The match is followed by a 3 p.m. concert by the group America. There is also a silent auction.

Proceeds benefit the Tim and Tom Gullikson Foundation to provide assistance for brain-tumor patients and their families.

* Keith Huyssoon has replaced Marty Klein as coach of the Harvard-Westlake boys' team.

Klein led the Wolverines to the Southern Section Division II championship in 1999 and the Division III title in 1998. Harvard-Westlake won the Division III title in 1997 under another coach.
