Laguna Niguel

March 10, 2000|Sue Doyle, (949) 574-4204

The City Council on Wednesday unanimously approved the site plan for the $2.5-million Alicia Skate and Soccer Park in the 27000 block of Alicia Parkway. The plans included a 19,000-square-foot skateboard park, soccer field, 107 parking spaces, a drop-off area and restrooms.

When Laguna Niguel was incorporated in 1989, the City Council prohibited skateboarding on streets and other public areas.

Six years ago, skateboard enthusiasts asked the council for a place of their own, said Pamela Lawrence, the city's recreation and services director. In approving the facility, council members decided that it will include rental safety equipment and liability waivers.
