Woman's Body Found Along Rural Road

March 14, 2000

OXNARD — A field worker discovered the body of a half-dressed woman early Monday morning in a drainage ditch near the junction of Rice Avenue and Wooley Road, authorities said.

The woman, whom investigators have not identified, apparently died of massive head trauma, Sheriff's Cmdr. Dick Purnell said.

Authorities suspect that she was killed elsewhere and dumped next to a sod farm in the 1500 block of Rice Road.

The woman, described as a Latina in her early 20s, was found lying on her side about 7 a.m., Purnell said.

He said the woman apparently had been killed recently, and did not appear to have any gun or knife wounds.

Investigators closed the southbound side of Rice Avenue for about eight hours as they searched for clues at adjacent farms and along the road.

The results of an autopsy are expected today, a coroner's spokesman said.
