St. Maximilian Kolbe Dedication

March 18, 2000

St. Maximilian Kolbe's dedication ceremonies begin at 5 p.m. today with a concelebrated Mass at St. Jude's, 32032 W. Lindero Canyon Road, Westlake Village.

At 7 p.m. a Service of Farewell will be held at St. Maximilian Kolbe's temporary sanctuary at 1125 Lindero Canyon Road, Westlake Village. A procession to the church's permanent home, 5801 Kanan Road, and an all-night prayer vigil will follow the farewell.

Cardinal Roger Mahony, Bishop Tomas J. Curry and Msgr. Peter O'Reilly will officiate the Rite of Dedication serving to open, bless and sanctify the new St. Maximillian Kolbe Catholic Church in Westlake Village by invitation only at noon Sunday.

Effective March 25, Mass times are 5 p.m. Saturdays and 7:30, 9 and 11 a.m. Sundays.

Youths Called to Torah

* Karen Siegel, 13, will be called to the Torah in celebration of her bat mitzvah at 10 a.m. today at Temple Etz Chaim in Thousand Oaks. She is the daughter of Gary and Karen Siegel.

Aaron Goldhammer, 13, will be called to the Torah in celebration of his bar mitzvah during the Mincha services at 5:30 p.m. today. He is the son of Stanley and JoAnn Goldhammer.

Guest Rabbi Michael Wasserman of Birmingham, Ala., will deliver a sermon during services at 8:15 p.m. Friday and comment on the Torah reading at 10 a.m. March 25.

Rabbi From Texas to Speak

* Rabbi Richard Spiegel of San Antonio, Texas, is guest rabbi at Temple Etz Chaim of Thousand Oaks this weekend. He will comment on the Torah reading during a service at 8:15 a.m. today.

Rabbi Shimon Paskow, spiritual leader of the congregation, will conduct the Saturday morning service. Cantor Jeff Cohen will chant the traditional liturgy.

The holiday of Purim will begin with a brief service at 7 p.m. Monday, followed by a masquerade walk. Children are encouraged to come in costume.

Day of Enrichment for the Disabled

* West Ventura County Handicapables will offer a day of spiritual and social enrichment for all physically disabled people today at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish Hall in Ventura.

Registration is at 11 a.m. Mass is at 11:30, followed by a luncheon and entertainment.

There is no charge.

All Saints Episcopal Activities

* All Saints Episcopal Church of Oxnard will have a week of activities beginning with a "Bread of Life" dinner in the parish hall at 5:30 p.m. today.

On Sunday, there will be worship services at 8 and 11 a.m. A Spanish worship service will be held at 9:30 a.m.

Classes Sunday will include a 9:30 a.m. adult lectionary Bible study led by the Rev. Warren V. Porter and a 10:30 a.m. class for children led by Sunday School Supt. Cindy Morales.

A Christian Spirituality meeting will be held in the parish hall at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.

There will be a Holy Eucharist service in Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

A noon luncheon and Lenten study called "Talking It Over" will be held throughout Lent in members' homes. Call the church for location. Choir rehearsal will be in Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

There will be a youth group Bible study at 5 p.m. Friday and a 6 p.m. supper and studies in Spanish in members' homes throughout Lent. Call the church for location.

Services at First Presbyterian

* First Presbyterian Church of Oxnard will hold a worship service at 10 a.m. Sunday. Pastor James K. Bain Jr. will deliver the sermon "Burning Bushes," based on Exodus 3:1-12 and 4:13.

There will be Sunday School for youths during the worship service. Adult Sunday School will be at 9 a.m.

Child care is available at all services.

Temple Hosts Purim Carnival

* Temple Beth Torah of Ventura will have a Purim carnival with games, food and prizes from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.

Those attending are asked to bring a canned good for the needy.

Weekly Lenten Meetings in Oxnard

* St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Oxnard is offering a "Lenten Wednesday With Jesus" series from 7 to 8 p.m. each Wednesday until April 12.

Daffodil Days at St. Paul's

* St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Oxnard will hear from the Rev. Alan P. Gorsline on "A Visit with Abraham" during the service at 10:15 a.m. Sunday. Children will meet in the sanctuary for the beginning of the worship celebration before being dismissed to their classrooms. The Japanese Ministry will meet at 2 p.m.

Daffodil bouquets purchased in honor or memory of special people will decorate the altar during the services in celebration of the American Cancer Society's "Daffodil Days."
