Trip Pitfalls

March 19, 2000

Regarding "Maximize Pleasure While Minimizing Costs at Sea" (Travel Insider, Feb. 6): Author Terry Williams advocates that cruisers forgo the shore excursions offered by the cruise line and seek the same or similar excursions from local vendors.

This can save money. But unless you have bought travel insurance independent of that offered by the cruise line, you may not be covered if you are injured during excursions not sponsored by the cruise line. Also, if you are late returning, you will be responsible for any expenses you incur to rejoin the cruise.

As a professional travel consultant, I advise you to shop for bargains, but know the pros and cons.
