Residents and city officials reacted strongly to any proposed area code changes at a public meeting this week.

"We as a city oppose the change and will fight it," Councilwoman Cassie DeYoung told the forum, which included representatives from a variety of phone companies.

Plans for any changes by April 2002 would depend on which proposed area code plan is chosen, said Mary Jo Borak, regulatory analyst for the California Public Utilities Commission.

There are three possible changes, Borak said: Leaving "949" to serve one geographic area and assign one new area code to the remaining area; dividing South County in three parts, leaving one with 949 and adding two codes for the other sections; and letting current customers keep their area code and telephone number but give new numbers a new area code.
