Ion Miclea; Romanian Photographer, Author

Ion Miclea, 68, Romanian photographer and children's author who twice won the World Press photo competition. Employed until 1990 by the newspaper Faclia in the city of Cluj, Miclea published many books with photographs of the United States, Egypt, Greece, Africa, China and Turkey. His photos were also exhibited in several western European cities. Miclea created photo essays about Romania's cultural and historical heritage, including one about sculptor Constantin Brancusi. Miclea won World Press Photo awards in 1968 and 1970. The first was for a collection of photographs dedicated to Arthur Rubinstein, the late pianist, and the second for photographs of the Danube River delta's people and ecosystem. He also wrote several books for children and illustrated travel journals by various Romanian authors. On Saturday in Bucharest, Romania, eight years after he was paralyzed by a stroke.
