Three men posing as police officers assaulted five guests at a Buena Park motel early Tuesday morning, authorities said.

One man, 28-year-old George Pichardo of Northridge was shot and pistol-whipped, Buena Park Police Sgt. Chris Nunez said.

Nunez said the five men were in a room at the Gaslight Motel on Beach Boulevard around 1 a.m. Tuesday when they heard a knock on the door. Three men posing as officers forced their way into the room and ordered the victims to the floor.

A struggle erupted after the victims realized they were targets of a robbery, Nunez said. Investigators have not determined why the five men were targeted or if anything was stolen.

The assailants, all in their early 20s with shaved heads, ran from the motel room and were last seen going south on Beach Boulevard in a dark green Ford Explorer, police said.

Pichardo, who was struck in the head and shot in the chest during the struggle, was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange where he was reported to be in stable condition. None of the other victims were injured.
