CSUN Begins Diet Program at Center

March 31, 2000|INDRANEEL SUR

Starting today, Cal State Northridge students and faculty will teach families at the Woodman Center Head Start Program the importance of balancing a nutritious diet with exercise.

The Project Community Nutrition Resource program focuses on low-income, largely Latino areas whose residents often have no health insurance, said Jerry Ann Harrel-Smith, a professor at CSUN and the program's administrator.

Classes are underway in Pacoima and San Fernando.

Lillie Grossman, a CSUN professor whose students are teaching one of the courses, said the state-funded program combines lessons about nutrition, exercise and healthy sleeping habits. The courses are taught mostly in English, but educational materials published in Spanish also will be handed out, she said.

Sessions at the Woodman Center, 5944 Woodman Ave., are scheduled today from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and will continue on subsequent Fridays.

For more information, call Harrel-Smith at (818) 677-7251.
