For the first time in more than 60 years, the City Council tonight may approve changing the Fourth of July parade route to include Pacific Coast Highway.

With television broadcasting the 96th annual event live, parade organizers want to highlight the city's best feature by having the beach serve as a backdrop.

But with plans to close the busy highway from Goldenwest Street to Beach Boulevard from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., police are concerned about traffic and crowd control.

In recent years, the Independence Day parade traveled only through residential streets.
