Irvine officials said they may have to shelve plans to renovate the dilapidated Heritage Park Aquatic Complex, citing recent construction estimates that exceed the project's budget by more than $5 million.

Instead, city officials and swim coaches are searching for alternatives to meet the swimming-crazed city's demand for chlorinated water. One scenario includes using the funds from the project budget to build pools at two high schools until the Heritage renovations can be salvaged.

The City Council will consider whether to postpone the rehabilitation of the city's only public pool complex at its May 23 meeting.
