River Cleanup Drive to Get Underway

May 05, 2000

LOS ANGELES — The nonprofit Friends of the Los Angeles River will stage its 11th annual cleanup, dubbed La Gran Limpieza, today and Saturday at sites stretching from the San Fernando Valley to Long Beach along the river.

To add a festive air, musical groups will be at each of the cleanup sites to encourage the hundreds of volunteers scheduled to participate. Officials warn volunteers to wear sturdy shoes and work gloves.

The cleanup will start at 9 a.m. today on the river's east bank at Fletcher Drive near Silver Lake.

On Saturday, the river cleanup is scheduled for sites including the Sepulveda Basin, Bette Davis Park in Glendale, Riverside Drive near the Golden State Freeway in Elysian Valley, and the Willow Street Bridge and the Golden Shores Wetlands Area, both in Long Beach.
