Performing Arts Center Opens at High School

May 09, 2000

CLAREMONT — It was long time in the works, but Walnut High School finally has a performing arts center.

Opened last week, the 459-seat theater features a 2,605-square-foot hardwood stage, an orchestra pit and a drama classroom. The $4.8-million project was the last to be built with a $50-million local bond measure approved by voters in 1991, said Principal Ken Gunn.

The theater is set into what was an empty hillside and has been widely anticipated by students and parents, he said. "In this community, the arts are highly valued," he said.
