Coogan's Perfect Game Sparks El Camino Real

Melissa Coogan pitched a perfect game, striking out eight, and top-seeded El Camino Real High cruised past Venice, 8-0, Tuesday in a first-round game of the City Championship playoffs.

Freshman Kelly Lombard had two hits and two runs batted in, and Lily Landers had three hits and scored three runs for the Conquistadores (21-4-1).

In other City Championship first-round games:

Kennedy 9, Cleveland 0--Ryane Montes threw a four-hitter, struck out six and walked one for Kennedy at Brand Park in San Fernando.

The Golden Cougars (20-3), who will host Chatsworth in a quarterfinal on Thursday, got two hits each from Alissa Villanueva, Antoinette DaSilva and Monique Acedo.

DaSilva and Acedo each drove in two runs and Villanueva scored twice.

Cleveland (15-9) had runners in scoring position in the second and fourth innings. Brandi King was picked off second by catcher DaSilva to end the second.

Laura Demetrion doubled to start the fourth and went to third on a groundout before being stranded.

Chatsworth 1, Westchester 0--Cassie Shires pitched a two-hitter for the Chancellors (15-10) at Westchester (15-6).

Melissa Freeark's single scored Samantha Piznik in the first inning. Piznik finished with two hits.

Sylmar 5, South Gate 2--Vanessa Lira threw a one-hitter, struck out eight and hit two triples for host Sylmar (15-7).

Eagle Rock 4, Verdugo Hills 2--Melissa McGillivray pitched a five-hitter with six strikeouts and Elvira Pimental had two hits and an RBI for host Eagle Rock (23-4).


Monroe 10, North Hollywood 4--Annette Vaiz scattered eight hits with seven strikeouts and Celeste Bonilla had two hits and three RBIs for the Vikings (7-11) in a first-round victory at Monroe.

Amy Quinones had four hits and scored three runs for North Hollywood (17-15).
