Irvine's math champs, 7, the rest of the competitors combined, 8.

Those were the results for Irvine's elementary students at the Orange County Mathematics Field Day recently. In addition to the seven first-place finishes, they also snapped up nearly a third of all awards.

"They are going to get pretty sick of us pretty soon," said Dorothy Terman, who coordinates the math and science program for the Irvine Unified School District.

The annual competition, which began about 10 years ago, challenges students to apply their math skills in four areas, said Kim Bednar, a third-grade teacher at Northwood Elementary School who helped coordinate the event.

More than 500 students, teamed in quartets, from 18 school districts participated in the event at Fountain Valley High School.
