Stabbing Victim in Critical Condition; Husband Held

May 24, 2000

SANTA ANA — A Santa Ana woman was in critical condition late Tuesday after her husband stabbed her repeatedly, authorities said.

Police found her husband, 57-year-old Guillermo Contreras, covered in blood and holding a 2-year-old boy when they responded to a domestic disturbance call in the 300 block of East Central Avenue shortly after noon, said Police Sgt. Raul Luna.

Inside the house, investigators found the 25-year-old woman, who was not identified, with multiple stab wounds to her head. A butcher knife was stuck in her throat, Luna said.

The woman was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where she was in critical but stable condition.

Cardenas was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, Luna said.
