Housing Funds for Seniors, Disabled

May 27, 2000|BARBARA MURPHY

Millions of dollars in state funds are available to senior citizens and disabled people through the state's Homeowner and Renter Assistance Program, according to the Franchise Tax Board.

The filing period for the program runs through Aug. 31. To qualify, claimants must be at least 62 years old, blind or totally disabled as of Dec. 31, 1999. Total household income for those seeking assistance could not have exceeded $33,993 in 1999.

"Our elderly and disabled are often those most in need of a helping hand," said Kathleen Connell, state controller and chairwoman of the tax board. "Providing this once-a-year chance to receive cash from the state may mean a difference in their lives."

Last year, the state issued $71 million in assistance to 391,000 claimants.

Qualified homeowners can receive between $14 and $326.40 yearly. Renters can receive between $10 and $240.

Application forms may be obtained by calling (800) 338-0505.
