Walking Underwater in Keiko's Former Home

May 28, 2000

The former home of Keiko the killer whale, the "Free Willy" movie star who was airlifted from the U.S. to Iceland in 1998, has been transformed into an exhibit at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, Ore.

The centerpiece of "Passages of the Deep," which opened Saturday, is a 200-foot-long acrylic tunnel that "immerses" visitors in a 1.3-million-gallon tank filled with ocean life, including cold-water sharks. The tunnel is suspended 8 feet below the water's surface and 8 feet above the bottom to give a 360-degree view. The exhibit is included with museum admission: $9.25 adults, $4.75 ages 4-13, free under 4. Tel. (541) 867-3474, Internet http://www.aquarium.org.
