May 29, 2000|LON EUBANKS

Three Cal State Fullerton players earned spots on the Fullerton NCAA regional all-tournament team Sunday.

Pitcher Ronnie Corona earned a spot, striking out 12 and giving up only four hits in Fullerton's 5-2 victory over Loyola Marymount that moved the Titans into Sunday's championship game against USC.

Seniors Steve Woodward and Chris Beck also were selected to the team. Woodward batted .625 (10 for 16) in the tournament with five runs and Beck batted .611 (11 for 18) with six runs batted in.

Woodward, a transfer from Texas as a senior, finished the season with a .431 batting average, surpassing the school season record of .422 set by Mark Kotsay in 1995.

Six USC players were selected to the team: shortstop Seth Davidson, first baseman Alberto Concepcion, third baseman Justin Gemoll, catcher Beau Craig and designated hitter Brian Barre. Loyola Marymount's Billy Traber and Anthony Angel were also chosen.

Corona got off to a slow start this season after earning a starting spot, but he finished the season with a 3.94 earned-run average.

"Mentally, he has turned it around in the last several weeks," pitching coach Dave Serrano said. "He pitched Saturday night like we expected him to pitch early in the season. He dominated a very good Loyola Marymount team."

Corona, a junior, hasn't decided if he will return to Fullerton or sign a pro contract.
