Planning commissioners last week used a request by Brea Mall management to add advertising displays as an opportunity to voice their displeasure over outside vending machines that commissioners said cheapened the mall's look.

Commissioners delayed voting on new wall-mounted displays until the mall agrees to remove the machines. They did, however, approve plans for seven bus shelter-sized advertising display kiosks inside and outside the mall near main entrances.

Mall-owner Simon Property Group estimates that every ad on the kiosks will bring in about $400 a month.

Commissioner Richard Creagh thought the vending machines were more downscale than upscale. "We're trying to make the mall a high-class mall, and I think the Coke machines cheapen it," he said.
