Bank Robbery Suspect Dies in Shootout With Officers

November 04, 2000

ARCADIA — A bank robbery suspect traced to a hotel was slain during a shootout with sheriff's SWAT team officers Friday afternoon, deputies said.

Investigators said the 37-year-old man, whose identity was not disclosed, was a suspect in several robberies, the latest at a Bank of America branch in the San Gabriel Valley on Oct. 2.

Detectives and Special Weapons and Tactics team officers surrounded the Mariott Residence Inn at Santa Clara Street and 2nd Avenue after learning that the suspect was staying there, deputies said. They said that when the officers attempted to arrest the man, he fled to the nearby channel of the Santa Anita Wash.

David Hinig, Arcadia's chief of police, said the suspect died at about 1:30 p.m. after he shot at the pursuing officers and several of them returned fire.
