Texas Tech running back Ricky Williams will return for a fifth season at the Big 12 Conference school after sitting out all last season because of a knee injury, the school said. Williams was granted an injury-hardship waiver by the NCAA.

Dave Meyer will start at quarterback for Virginia Tech against Central Florida in place of injured Michael Vick. Although Vick might play, receiver Andre Davis has been ruled out of action. . . . Georgia quarterback Quincy Carter, battling a ligament injury to his right thumb suffered in the loss to Florida, may not play against Auburn. Cory Phillips would replace Carter. . . . VMI has decided against asking for an honorable discharge from the Southern Conference. The school, which has been a member of the conference since 1925, is 3-40 in the last four years.
