Renting to Sailors

November 12, 2000

In "No Harm in Tenant Stating Intentions," Oct. 29, Ted Smith answered a question from a Navy person regarding his need to inform his landlord if he planned to keep his apartment when he was deployed.

Smart landlords near Navy facilities register their vacancies and upcoming vacancies with the local Navy housing office so that people like my son, who was recently transferred from Rhode Island to San Diego, can obtain information and arrange for a rental a couple of months before the move.

In addition they have a setup that allows for the payment of rent and utilities during periodic deployments.

Perhaps the landlord who asked the young man his intentions simply wanted to know whether or not he should plan to list an upcoming vacancy.
