High School Notebook

George Contreras, football coach at Rio Mesa High since 1994, has resigned.

Contreras, 53, had a 22-50 record at Rio Mesa. He coached Westlake from 1978-1988, winning two Marmonte League championships.

Contreras, who has coached for 31 years, will retire from coaching but remain at Rio Mesa as a teacher.

"It's something I've thought about for some time now," he said. "I set some goals this year. They were pretty modest goals, considering the level of experience we were going to have, and we just didn't meet 'em. I didn't feel good about that."

The Spartans finished 1-9, including an 0-4 mark in the Pacific View League this season.

"There's been no pressure for me," Contreras said. "I just feel I've put in my time, and it's just time for me to turn it over to other people."
