LA CANADA — Patrick Perrigue scored three touchdowns and La Canada High defeated Workman, 49-6, in the first round of the Southern Section Division X playoffs Thursday night.

Perrigue returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a score, igniting a 42-0 first-half outburst by the Spartans (10-1).

He also returned a punt 57 yards for a touchdown and scored on a 36-yard pass play from Eric Young.

Perrigue caught three passes for 75 yards.

Strong special teams play allowed La Canada good field position for most of the game. The Spartans started possessions in Workman territory five times.

"Our special teams did a heck of a job," La Canada Coach Rich Wheeler said. "They won the game for us."

Young completed seven of eight passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns, including a 27-yard screen to Tony Naples that gave La Canada a 35-0 lead in the second quarter.

James Woods of Workman (3-8) had 137 yards in 20 carries, including a nine-yard run with 5:29 left.

La Canada limited Anthony Silva of Workman to 75 yards passing on eight of 21, with interceptions by Garret Sharpe and Lonnie Dietz.
