November 18, 2000|From Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Three companies are recalling about 243,000 bicycle helmets because they failed government impact testing.

Variflex, of Moorpark, Calif.; NHS, of Santa Cruz, Calif.; and First Team Sports, of Anoka, Minn., have not received reports of injuries, but they are recalling the helmets as a precaution, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Friday.

Most of the recall--about 240,000 helmets--concerns Variflex's "X-Games Aggressive" helmets, which can be returned to stores where purchased for a refund or replacement helmet. More information is available from Variflex at (800) 248-5327 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. PST Monday through Friday.

NHS is recalling about 1,100 "TSG Metallic Gold," 1,000 "TSG Gloss Black" and 500 "TSG Foundation Blue" helmets. These helmets should be returned to NHS for a refund. For instructions, consumers can call the company at (877) 743-7820 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. PST Monday through Friday.

First Team Sports is recalling 1,000 "Guardian Junior" helmets. Consumers can call (800) 528-5872 between 5:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. PST Monday through Friday.
