PALO ALTO — Annual salaries of Web site developers are highest in California, followed by the southern U.S., according to a survey.

Northern California Web developer salaries averaged $74,999 a year, while Southern California salaries were about $70,555, said Lori Piquet, who commissioned and compiled the survey by Inc., a provider of software development information.

Average salaries in the southern U.S. came in third at $69,090, and the central and mountain region came in last at $58,528.

Outside the U.S., Web developer salaries averaged $38,868 a year, Piquet said.

Piquet said respondents were asked what they anticipated their total monetary compensation to be in U.S. dollars for 2000. Monetary compensation included annual salary, bonus and profit sharing. There were 247 respondents.

Piquet defined Internet developers as people who create and maintain Web sites and Internet networks, and program software for the Internet.

Palo Alto-based said salary increases and training opportunities were important factors in employees' job satisfaction. Company-subsidized training and certification were the most important perks employees requested.
