Onxard Knocks Off Powerful Mater Dei

Sienna Abraham made two free throws with 4.4 seconds left and Oxnard High held on for a 56-52 victory over Mater Dei during pool play at the Woodbridge girls' basketball tournament on Monday.

Abraham finished with 12 points and six assists for the Yellowjackets (1-0). Teammate Sarah Queen had 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Jacqui Heck blocked shots.

Mater Dei, a Southern Section Division I-A semifinalist last season, was led by Jessica Williams, who scored 20 points.

Oxnard had 11 steals and blocked seven shots.

In other girls' basketball games:

Valencia 64, Lancaster 54--Stephanie Patterson scored 16 points, Rashae Minor had 15, and the host Vikings (1-0) won a nonleague game.

Patterson made six of 13 shots and Minor had nine rebounds.

Simi Valley 61, Rio Mesa 39--Teresa Cooper scored 30 points and had eight rebounds to lead the host Pioneers (1-0).

Chaminade 61, Westridge 34--Christina Zdenek had 18 points and five steals and the Eagles (1-0) won a nonleague game at Westridge (0-1).

Cynthia Lai and Shauna Johnson each added eight points and Amy Bissinger had eight rebounds for Chaminade.

Santa Paula 61, Oak Park 56--Rachel Kolbeck scored 19 points and had 14 rebounds to lead host Santa Paula (1-0).

Montclair Prep 62, Archer 17--Eshaya Murphy scored 31 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the host Mounties (1-0).


Burbank 65, Antelope Valley 55--Trent Cleveland scored 26 points and the Bulldogs (1-0) won a nonleague game at Burbank.

La Canada 83, Highland 72--Joel Kim scored 17 points, Greg Gaudino had 16 and 14 rebounds for the host Spartans (1-0) in a nonleague game.

Littlerock 74, Barstow 57--Mike Creel had 16 points and 18 rebounds to lead host Littlerock (1-0).

Teammate Ronald Hughes had 11 rebounds.
