This report on genetically modified foods from a 12-member panel of the National Research Council, part of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, offers a cautious endorsement of biotech foods, but also calls for more oversight and regulation. The report finds no evidence that any foods made from plants that have been genetically engineered to produce their own pesticides are unsafe to eat. However, the report does advise the government to conduct studies on the long-term health effects of eating biotech foods and recommends that the EPA regulate crops modified to resist viruses. A free, pre-publication copy of the report is available online at the National Academy Press Web site. www.nap.edu/catalog/9795.htm.
